Energy consumption audit of a computer infrastructure

01/2009

In 2009 SYNAIRGIS performed an energy consumption audit of the IT infrastructure (servers and workstations) of a major Canadian bank. This was part of a wider energy audit of the organisation’s 14-story building also carried out by SYNAIRGIS (see the similar projects section).

Energy consumption of the server infrastructure was measured from available records.  The energy consumption of the workstations and peripherals (several thousand in total) was estimated using manufacturer’s data and calibrated through direct measurement sampling.

We were able to create a set of dynamic Excel tables allowing our client to analyse their results, to insert additional records and to flexibly consider the impact of modifications, such as a change in manufacturers.

A final report was submitted to the client with a set of recommendations on how to best optimize the energy consumption of their IT infrastructure.
